We have been reading to learn about taxes through the fictional book, "The Backpack Tax", and we have been practicing our writing by writing a summary of the main idea and important details of the story. Students are now working with a partner on editing our class summary of the text, keeping in mind to start with the 'big things' like ideas and organization of the text and moving towards the minor details such as spelling and fonts.
In 5th grade we are working on our Government unit. Students are learning about various styles of government systems and the rights and responsibilities of both governments and citizens.

In 4th grade we are working on reading and writing comparisons of how work was done before electricity and how it is done now. We have been looking for 'signal words' in texts that tell us when two ideas are being compared (looking for similarities) or contrasted (looking for differences) and then trying to use similar signal words in our own writing. We are writing paragraphs with clear topic sentences and concluding sentences that tell our main idea, supporting ideas and examples, and smooth transitions between sentences. We have also been comparing and contrasting the use of past simple tense and present perfect tense for writing about events in the past and ensuring we are using these tenses appropriately in our writing. |
